Review by Mbui Suleiman

Dresden Venezia Megaton by Gordon Mumma is a groundbreaking album that showcases the composer's innovative approach to electronic music. The album consists of four pieces, each of which explores different sonic textures and timbres.

The first piece, "Dresden Interleaf 13 February 1945," is a haunting meditation on the destruction of Dresden during World War II. Mumma uses a variety of electronic sounds to create a sense of chaos and devastation, while also incorporating more melodic elements to evoke a sense of mourning.

The second piece, "Venezia Spaces," is a more abstract work that explores the relationship between sound and space. Mumma uses a variety of electronic effects to create a sense of movement and depth, as if the listener is navigating through a complex sonic landscape.

The third piece, "Megaton for Wm. Burroughs," is a tribute to the writer William S. Burroughs. Mumma uses a variety of electronic sounds to create a sense of disorientation and unease, reflecting Burroughs' own experimental approach to literature.

The final piece, "Dresden Venezia Megaton," is a tour-de-force that brings together all of the elements of Mumma's approach to electronic music. The piece is a dense, complex work that is both challenging and rewarding for the listener.

About Gordon Mumma

Gordon Mumma (March 30, 1935, Framingham, MA, USA) is an American composer who attented the School of Music (195253) and Institute of Science and Technology (195962) of the University of Michigan and studied composition, piano and the horn privately. Mumma co-founded and worked with the Cooperative Studio for Electronic Music in Ann Arbor (195866) and the ONCE Group (196068). Mumma also collaborated with Milton Cohen's Space Theater in Ann Arbor (195764) and in New York with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company (196674) and the Sonic Arts Union (from 1966). His reputation was founded on his contributions to electro-acoustic music, particularly his custom-built circuits for sound creation and manipulation. Mumma's cybersonic circuitry modifies and interrelates live instrumental, ambient and electronically-produced sounds and their various transformations. n
